Gurukul Dharma ("we," "us," or "our") is a spiritual education platform. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal information when you use our website at gurukuldharma.com and our mobile applications (collectively, the "Service").

By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide

  • Account information: name, email address, and password when you create an account.
  • Profile information: display name, preferred language, and learning preferences.
  • Payment information: billing details provided through our payment processor (see Section 5).
  • User content: notes, bookmarks, questions, and responses you create within the Service.

Information collected automatically

  • Learning progress: lesson completions, quiz scores, and time spent on activities.
  • Practice data: japa counts, meditation session durations, vrata observances, and puja completions.
  • Device and usage data: browser type, operating system, IP address, pages visited, and referring URLs.
  • Authentication tokens and session identifiers.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Service.
  • Personalize your learning experience, including adaptive content recommendations.
  • Track your spiritual practice progress (japa, meditation, vrata) so you can review your own journey.
  • Process payments and manage subscriptions.
  • Send transactional emails (account verification, password resets, payment receipts).
  • Respond to your support requests.
  • Analyze usage patterns in aggregate to improve our educational content.
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or security incidents.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your personal data for third-party advertising.

3. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on servers operated by Supabase, Inc., which provides our authentication and database infrastructure. Supabase stores data in secure, SOC 2-compliant data centers. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest.

We implement reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

4. Cookies and Local Storage

We use cookies and browser local storage to:

  • Maintain your authenticated session.
  • Remember your theme preference (Night or Dawn mode).
  • Cache learning progress locally for offline access and faster loading.

We do not use third-party tracking cookies or advertising cookies. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, but some features of the Service may not function properly without them.

5. Payment Processing

Payments are processed by Stripe, Inc. When you make a purchase, your payment card details are transmitted directly to Stripe and are never stored on our servers. Stripe is PCI DSS Level 1 certified. We receive only a tokenized reference, your name, email, and the last four digits of your card for receipt purposes.

6. Children's Privacy (Bala Mode)

Gurukul Dharma offers a "Bala" mode designed for children ages 6 through 12. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for users in the United States and equivalent protections for users in other jurisdictions.

  • Parental consent required. A parent or legal guardian must create and manage a Bala mode account. We collect verifiable parental consent before collecting any personal information from a child.
  • Limited data collection. Bala accounts collect only a display name (which may be a pseudonym) and learning progress data. We do not collect email addresses, real names, or other identifiers directly from children.
  • No behavioral advertising. We do not serve ads to any users, including children.
  • Parental access and deletion.Parents may review their child's data, request corrections, or request deletion at any time by contacting us at the address in Section 10.

7. Data Sharing

We share personal information only in the following limited circumstances:

  • Service providers. With Supabase (hosting and authentication) and Stripe (payments) as described above, and with any other providers strictly necessary to operate the Service, under contractual obligations to protect your data.
  • Legal requirements. When required by law, regulation, legal process, or enforceable government request.
  • Safety. When we believe disclosure is necessary to prevent harm, fraud, or violations of our Terms of Service.
  • Business transfers. In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred. We will notify you before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

8. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. Practice data (japa, meditation, vrata records) is retained to maintain the continuity of your spiritual practice history. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal information within 30 days, except where retention is required by law or for legitimate business purposes (such as resolving disputes or enforcing our agreements).

9. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights regarding your personal information:

  • Access. Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction. Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data.
  • Deletion. Request deletion of your personal data. You can initiate account deletion from your profile settings, or by contacting us directly.
  • Data portability. Request an export of your data in a machine-readable format.
  • Withdraw consent. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw it at any time.
